The river Tay, Scotland’s longest river, runs through Perth and gives the former town a rural atmosphere especially along the riverside walks and parks. Often called the “Gateway to the Highlands” due to the roads leading north from the city towards the Cairngorms and Inverness, and to the west towards Crieff and the west coast of Scotland, with the ferry links to the Islands of Mull and Skye at Oban. Perth borders the outstanding area of Highland Perthshire, this alone is a good reason to consider staying in the city as it is an ideal holiday base to explore the area. It is also close to golf courses, castles, historic houses, gardens and National Trust properties, many open to visitors for an entrance charge.
The river Tay is a beautiful river, known for its salmon fishing. The river has also brought industry and trade into Perth with fairly large ships able to dock at Perth Harbour. Perth has a long history with many of the Scottish kings crowned on the Stone of Destiny at the nearby Scone Palace. Today it is a busy, modern city with an excellent range of restaurants, cafe's, shops and traditional pubs. The city has plenty of entertainment available, some formal at the Horsecross, Perth's Theatre, and at the Perth Concert Hall. In the hotels and pubs less formal music and Scottish Ceilidh's are often arranged, you may need to book in advance for some of these events. For garden and plant lovers then you must visit the beautiful Branklyn Garden, an outstanding National Trust for Scotland property. The garden was created in the 1920's with many of the plants gathered by famous plant collectors of the time. Wonderful in summer with many flowering plants.
