North of Scotland - Sutherland the land of gold
Visit Sutherland and stay at Altnaharra
Sutherland has always been in my mind “gold” country and there are many places in the hills and valleys of this highland land where gold is just waiting to be discovered. I have always loved Sutherland and find it one of the most romantic areas of Scotland with the magnificent mountains, many over 3000 feet and known as Munros, waiting to be climbed, or admired and photographed.
This area at the top north area of Scotland is also famous for its many lochs just full of brown trout waiting to be caught. While most lochs are private the permits to fish are often very reasonable and if you book local accommodation near these lochs you often find that “fishing” privileges are also included in the cost of your holiday. Many people just love seeing the scenery and only hunt with their camera, binoculars or telescopes - looking out for the golden eagles and other wildlife that can be seen in this wild unspoilt land.
Sutherland is one of my favourite places and in many of the more remote areas you will honestly feel as if you are the only person in the planet, not in a worrying isolated way, in a way that allows you to find inner peace and wonder at the beauty of nature, the ruggedness of nature that is magnificent. If you do not believe in God before your trip to Sutherland I would suggest you will probably be converted to a believer during your trip, or at least you will experience a deep inner contentment that can only be found where God has painted the land with his hand.
One of the areas where you will find this beauty and contentment is at Altnaharra where bed and breakfast accommodation where children and pets are welcome. You can also arrange to have dinner cooked for you, ideal after a day exploring the countryside. From Altnaharra you drive to Kinlochbervie on the west coast which is near Oldshoremore, a place I have had many a holiday. If you drive to Oldshoremore you must go down to the beach which is absolutely wonderful and if you feel adventurous the drive further along and walk to the haunted beach at Sandwood Bay. If you decide to do this walk then it is worth noting that dogs are not allowed on this walk.
From Altnaharra you can also drive north to the area around Tongue and Bettyhill. From there it is not far to drive to the area around Durness with the famous Smoo Cave. You can also take a trip to Cape Wrath – a trip I still have to do. The last time we visited Durness we had several meals in the restaurant attached to the campsite. And here is a little secret – they do fantastic ice cream, and with a liquor added it is just heaven!.
