On our recent trip to Caithness we drove up the A9 to Wick and John O' Groats. Driving on the east coast of Scotland through Sutherland we stopped at an ancient Celtic Broch - Carn Liath. This broch is found 3 Miles north of Golspie and before Brora, off the A9.
The Carn Liath broch is a Historic Scotland maintained site and is a typical Sutherland Broch. You need to take care when crossing over the road from the parking area that is off the A9, and children need to be closely supervised at this road crossing as vehicles drive at speed along this main road to Wick and Thurso from Inverness.
The Broch is well preserved and it is exciting to explore a building used by ancient people of Scotland. You can walk into the broch as well as go onto the top of it and look into the building. If you decide to walk up the stairs to the top of the broch you need to take some care if it is wet as it gets a bit slippy.
You can see some of the outer buildings of the broch as well as the secure inner area.
The Historic Scotland display gives an artists impression of how the Carn Liath broch would look like as a secure settlement.
