We just love the wild places in Scotland, Wester Ross, Sutherland, Caithness, Orkney. The minute I think about these fantastic places I want to go and visit them. If you book a cottage it is very convenient as you have all the luxuries you would have at home (in our case more!), yet you are then tied to a 100 mile radius to explore. One solution is to take a caravan on holiday, except when you are exploring areas such as Lochinver you will often see signs saying "Not Suitable for Caravans" (sometimes there is other words added by locals before the word Caravan).
So what is the solution? bed and breakfast? - that is also a good idea and we certainly recommend bed and breakfast accommodation throughout Scotland. This business helps bring tourism money into areas where there is not a lot of local work, and helps keep small communities together. You also get to meet real Scottish people (or people who have discovered Scotland and moved to the Highlands from England, Wales, the US, Australia and Canada). One little problem, if you want to explore Scotland during the tourism season of May to September you will often find it difficult to travel around and be assured of finding a bed and breakfast.
Campervans - the best way to visit Scotland? I think it is a great way to have a real Scottish adventure, take the surf board and travel around the Highlands and Islands - just buy a map of Scotland and go for it. Believe me if you take the time to explore Scotland, especially the Highlands you will feel you are in another country, jump on Ferries and explore the Hebrides and Shetland, not to mention the historical island of Orkney. A campervan allows you to do this, it lets you go where and when you want. If you don't make the destination there is always a place you can pull over and camp.
Why rent a Campervan? simple really it is an economic way of "owning" a campervan for 1, 2, 3 or more weeks. You don't have to be concerned about servicing or looking after it out with the holiday periods - just put your money into a high interest account and it will virtually pay for the rental.
Why buy your own Campervan - well it does put the neighbours noses out, only kidding. The real reason for owning your own Campervan, or Caravan for that matter, is the freedom to get away every weekend, even at the last minute. My wife loves the idea, no more worries about not getting the dogs into holiday accommodation, it's your campervan so you can do what you like with it.
Go on then, visit Campers Scotland and get your next holiday booked.
