Off-road campervans explore Scotland’s wild-sideThe wilds of Scotland are now more accessible and affordable than ever. Scotland’s wild and remote spaces are now open to all of us thanks to the latest in Japanese design, changes in forestry policy and the passion of a camping enthusiast turned entrepreneur.
Campers Scotland www.campers-scotland.com is one of Scotland’s young and dynamic companies capitalising on shifts in wilderness access policy in Scotland and northern England. Encouraged by the recent move by the Forestry Commission to open all its forestry roads and paths to the public, Campers Scotland recognises the increased desire to venture into the countryside and discover the wilder side of Britain.
Campers Scotland claims to offer the most affordable and versatile campervan on (and off) the road. They import what they regard as the best off-road campervan on the market – the Mazda Bongo, and offer it at a fraction of the cost of other rental and sales companies. The Mazda Bongo Friendee Campertop to give it its full name is Japan’s answer to off-roading and camping. It combines the high standards of Japanese luxury, with practicality, unrivalled versatility and 4-wheel drive technology. With seating capacity for 8, sleeping for 4 (with an additional two in their awnings) and robust 4WD these vans can take some of the largest families almost anywhere in comfort and style. ‘There is no better time to be exploring the highlands and islands of Scotland and England’ Campers Scotland director Gary Hayes believes, ‘with over 90% of our Forestry roads open to the public there are thousands of miles yet to be explored. Our Mazda Bongos offer for the first time a reliable and affordable way to venture, with your family, into this untapped wilderness’.
Campers Scotland was started after director Gary Hayes found existing campervans prohibitively expensive to hire or buy and unsuitable for the more adventurous camper. With nothing to suit in the European market, Gary Hayes had to go to as far afield as New Zealand to find the answer. ‘New Zealand, with the same terrain and climate as Scotland, had discovered the perfect solution for the increasing number of young travellers wanting to explore their very wild country – and do it in comfort’ Gary Hayes told Visit Scotland. Campers Scotland now imports its own vans direct from Japan, offering them at knock-down prices. Campervan Hire starts at £155 for a weekend and £355 for a week. Hire it for a month in the winter and you can get a van for as little as £29.50 a day. For those who also fall in love with them, Campers Scotland also sell Campervans, with prices starting at £4995 (including 3 month warranty). Their campervans also come with fridge, cookers, cooking equipment, and a host of extras such as DVD players, WCs and satellite TV. Campers Scotland in recognising the demand for luxury and comfort, now also desig and make their own campervan kitchen conversions. ‘Because we get our vans direct from Japan and convert them for to UK roads ourselves, we can afford to supply them at up to half the price of other campervan hire companies’ says Gary Hayes. Staff at Campers Scotland are passionate about exploring the wild. As regular mountaineers and canoeists themselves, staff love to advise on the new or exciting routes, hidden camping areas (most of which are free) and loads of attractions they love to seek out. ‘We have been inundated with calls to hire our vans and to find out where the best places are to stay’ states Gary Hayes ‘We hope to have double the amount of vans available for campers next season and to produce a campervan guide to free camping spots and areas to cycle and canoe.’ Campers Scotland have amassed a large database on wild campsites, hidden camping areas, off-road routes, canoe routes and other areas of interest for families, couples and the more determined camper. They plan to make this available to hirers in the spring. ‘We plan to provide a printable map and online interactive maps for people to plan their trips to Scotland’ says director Gary Hayes. ‘We encourage our customers to share their tours and secret spots with us so we can pass them on to successive customers’.
They also cater for canoeists and cyclists, with a range of equipment for hire – including mountain bikes for all sizes and ages, three-man Canadian canoes and tough kayaks for river and coastal trips. With thousands of undiscovered roads, over 4500 lochs, 3000 miles of coast and 787 islands, Scotland has a lot offer the intrepid travellers. For a cheap and adventurous holiday you could do a lot worse than check out Campers Scotland. Based in Tillicoultry near Stirling, Campers Scotland are ideally situated for access to all the major airports, the highlands, lowlands and most of Scotland’s major cities. Edinburgh is only 35 minutes away, while Glasgow is only 40 minutes by train. Go to website: http://www.campers-scotland.com
