Loch Ness in the Highlands of Scotland

Loch Ness - Scotland

Loch Ness is famous worldwide for the legend of Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster and while we call Nessie a legend many people have claimed to have seen a mysterious creature swimming in Scotland's second largest freshwater loch. The loch is 230 metres (754 feet) at its deepest point and is surrounded by beautiful hills and majestic mountains.

Loch Ness Scotland

On the banks of Loch Ness is Urquhart Castle and this Historic Scotland site is open to the public, as usual I always recommend that you become a member of Historic Scotland rather than paying for each visit to a historical site – it certainly works out cheaper being a member, plus you get 10 percent discount in the shop. While visiting Loch Ness you should take some time to visit the Loch Ness Exhibition Centre where you will discover exciting information on Loch Ness and the mystery that lies below.

Loch Ness Exhibition Centre

The Loch Ness Exhibition Centre (Formerly Loch Ness 2000) was established in 1980 and is still one of the most popular Visitor Attractions in Scotland. It guides you through 6 different themed chambers telling you the story of Loch Ness from the ice age to the present day.

Whilst keeping the mystery centre stage, it is the special things about Loch Ness that you cant see by looking at it that are explained in this excellent Interpretation Centre. It is designed, written and narrated by foremost authority on the subject Adrian Shine of The Loch Ness Project.

The Exhibition takes an unbiased viewpoint, and all the time it is asking the same question: is it actually possible? The Exhibition lets visitors understand the wider significance of Loch Ness.

The Loch Ness Exhibition Centre has a 5 Star Grading from VisitScotland, The National Tourist Board.

A great way to discover Loch Ness and what lies beneath.

There is also a vast retail complex at The Loch Ness Exhibition Centre that includes:

The Whisky Shop
  • The Whisky Shop
  • The Cashmere and Woolen Shop
  • The Nessie Shop (Est 1980)
  • The Kiltmaker
  • House of Heraldry (Research your clan)
  • Local Crafts

There are also excellent onsite catering facilities within The Drumnadrochit Hotel where you will find all you need for refreshment.

PLEASE NOTE: Coming from Inverness you will see The Loch Ness Exhibition Centre as soon as you enter the village of Drumnadrochit on the A82. However, if you coming from the Fort William side and through the village, make sure that you turn right over the bridge and look for the 5 Star VisitScotland Logo and The Drumnadrochit Hotel.
