5 out of 5 stars ...fabulous product, but in case you didn't read the (to be fair... not that small!) small print....   July 21, 2008
this satnav comes with a suction thingy... I didn't read the "what's in the box" properly and was swayed by "what other people bought with this".... so now I have two suction thingys, but completely my own fault for not reading the very clear notes by Amazon... but I guess I'm not the only one if it's still showing a separate suction thingy as being bought together with this model!

I haven't used a tomtom but I tested the garmin out on a daytrip to legoland and was really impressed. Very quick to set up and plan route. Would definatly recommend to a friend.

4 out of 5 stars Good Value   July 16, 2008

The Garmin 250 standard is a good package and value for money. I paid under 100 from Amazon. It is much more compact than a Tom Tom I have used and easier to use. Straightforward to use either during walking mode or in the car. It doesn't have all the gizmo's of higher priced sat nav's but still does the basic job. It takes a couple of minutes to find the satellites but during that time you can set up your travel data.
The instruction manual is OK but I did my usual thing and played around with it until I understood it then read the manual and I didn't do much wrong so there is hope for all us 'old un's'.
My only gripe is it's idea of some routes is a little strange. If I go to work using my own route it is 19 miles but with the sat nav it is different route and 22 miles. Fo some reason it takes me home a different route again at 23.5 miles. On longer journey's it seems to work out the route just fine.
I would recommend it to anyone who wants a basic sat nav that is simple to use. If you want an al singing and all dancing one then you are going to have to spend a lot more money for little extra.

3 out of 5 stars Better on UK use plus patience required!   July 6, 2008

Pros: Great price. Very compact and 'pocketable' compared to the Tom Tom range. Accurate permanent (and temporary zone) Europe wide speed camera data. Accurate, fast touch screen. Good battery life up to around four hours.

Cons: Takes an age to lock on when first switching on after prolonged periods of non use. Having to 'accept' the Garmin disclaimer is a pain before every trip. The ball joint window mount is completely useless with the female part collapsing inside and dropping the Garmin onto the dash a few times.. paid for extended warranty recommended on these! Have used unit in Holland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and round to Northern Russia (St Petersburg) Sardinia, Germany, France and Belgium with few problems apart from mountainous regions of Sardinia and north of Amsterdam where it just kept repeating the word "recalculating" like some kind of demented Dalek just about to explode.

Tip: Remember to switch to car from walking mode if used previously walking around a city etc otherwise you'll be driving along the most narrowest and un-navigable tracks/streets/alleys it can find for you !!

5 out of 5 stars Thrilled with my first satnav - so easy to use   July 3, 2008

This is my first satnav - it was a birthday present and just what I wanted, although I didn't know at the time! It's fantastic, very user friendly, intuitive, fast, with large print, bright colours, clear sound, a blue car which matches mine and the route is marked in PINK! It changes to nighttime colours automatically, recalculates routes quickly and I'm confident I won't get lost in Milton Keynes ever again. It's hard to believe there's anything out there that would suit me better.
