5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Detailed, Easy to Use   September 8, 1999

Madeira has some very fine hikes, and this book is essential for any visitor who is interested in hiking on the island. The book offers clear directions to trailheads and contains many useful topographical maps. Useful landmarks on hiking trails are described, and difficulty ratings are provided. The descriptions of the kinds of scenery one will encounter on individual hikes provide real assistance in choosing particular hikes. When my wife and I visited Madeira in March 1998, we had to look long and hard for an English-language edition of this guidebook, so it might be a good idea to buy it ahead of time. If you go to Madeira, don't miss the spectacular Pico Ruivo hike, but be forwarned -- the sheer dropoffs at the side of the trail near the Pico do Areirio end of the hike are rather intimidating.
