2 out of 5 stars Going out of date   April 14, 2008

We bought this map for a holiday on Crete in early 2008 and we used a hire car to get around the island. We are usually good at using maps to find our way but with this one we wasted a lot of time on wrong turnings.

The statement in the synopsis that "every road is included" is far from true. It is just not anything like that detailed. To add to the difficulty, there are a lot of major road developments underway on Crete and the map has become badly out-of-date. A good map is needed because of the lack of signposting especially in towns and villages. The coastal resorts have also seen numerous route changes and little seems to correspond to what is on the map. Sometimes a large hotel would be found where the map indicated a road going through. We were left wondering just how long ago those roads were updated on this map.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate and tough   November 19, 2006

I took a punt on the above reviews and purchased this map for two weeks cycling around the western part of the island. This map was superb. It handled getting wet, being folded in to strange and wonderous shapes to fit panniers, handlebar bags and cafe discussions with old men. In terms of accuracy it was very good although there was the odd location that needed to be revised, eg. the traditional settlement of Milia. It seemed to have all the rough old public farm tracks that are rather hard work on a laiden bike, and was accurate with the roads you can actually travel on without getting a puncture several times a day. Furthermore it retained good accuracy for the walking trails. The map has relatively good contour lines (which you should definitely be analysing if you're not in a car).

Overall I would certainly purchase another of these maps.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent holiday map   June 4, 2006

I bought this map before a week's holiday in Crete because I found the guide books' maps insufficient and too patchy. This one is excellent. It's made of strong paper/plastic, it has a cardboard cover that can stick on and off, and best of all it's very clear and has an excellent level of detail (well for our purposes anyway, it may not be sufficient for a trail - walker). The only negative comment I have is that it's got half of the island on one side and half on the other, so of course you keep having to turn over if you are going west from Heraklion.

All in all, I would definitely buy again a Rough Guide map for my holidays, even though I'm normally more of a Lonely Planet guidebooks fan.
