4 out of 5 stars Good all in one Lakeland map   January 2, 2008
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

I'd rate this 4.5 stars as it is a useful map especially for seeing how the various areas fit together, which isn't always easy with the four 1:250000 (3 inch to the mile) OS maps.

It is incredibly thin and light, made from a kind of plastic though apparently strong enough to resist tears. It come in a clear plastic case. I think I'd take this map on a walk but would plan it on an OS map. But if I was going to walk off-path the OS map would be essential.

It covers most of the region, though with the cover being printed on the top left section the western end of Crummock Water gets chopped off a bit (though it is added on the back) - so if you are planning on climbing Whiteside from Lanthwaite Green keep your OS map handy. The reverse of the map has the Scafell and Pillar areas at a larger 1:15000 scale, plus other information including first aid data.

The map is clear with fellnames in black and crags in red . All measurements are in metric: no miles or feet mentioned anywhere. Symbols are good, especially the use of shaded blue for marshy areas, this is clearer than the grass tufts on OS maps. Paths are pretty clear also, without the distinction betweem bridleways and paths of the OS maps.
